High-Tech Processing was requested to design, build, and commission a Whisky Blending Plant for Diageo Isipingo. The plant would receive raw whisky from producers in Scotland, blend it, and then chill filter it to meet the required parameters for bottling. The project was turnkey, providing services including process design, technology selection, mechanical design, electrical design, automation design, project management, construction management, procurement, and commissioning. Initially, the project timeline was set at 4 months; however, after initial site investigations, it was determined that due to the age of the plant and lack of automation, further upgrades were required. The final scope included installing a new bulk hot water system, refurbishing and automating the CIP plant, as well as various integrations of manual and closed-loop automated systems on site. The entire whisky plant will be Zone 2 rated, with the required equipment and instrumentation to mitigate the risks involved. High-Tech Processing worked closely with technology providers and brand owners to determine the optimal selection and process parameters for designing this first-of-a-kind plant for South Africa. Upon completion, the intended capacity of the plant is 130,000 hL per annum, with a significant increase in capacity if increases in production shifts are considered.
